das interview: Brian Lawrence is a highly skilled designer who's skills include 3D model building, conceptual sketching/rendering and also graphic design application. He has been working at Hasbro for over 7 years on lines such as Transformers, Star Wars, Gi-Joe, Batman, and others. He was nice enough to take the time to answer our questions regarding his work on Superman Lives for a proposed Hasbro-toyline. He also reveals what his thoughts are on the current 'in development' project and also tells us about his dream project! Q: When and how long did work on Superman Lives? BL: I worked on the project for about 6 months in August 1996 while working at Hasbro Toy Group in Cincinnati Ohio. Q: Are you a fan of Superman? BL:I'm a huge Superman fan. I love the first two movies and would always watch the TV shows from animation to live action Q: Who did you work with on the project? BL: I worked with Chris Woods and Brian Eun when we received the first script. Q: Where did you get insparation from for your designs? BL: I got my inspiration for my designs from the first movie. Using the same principles as the Crystal look but updating it with some design style. Q: What do you feel the suit should look like? BL: When working on the project I felt that the suit should be more modern and not to flashy. But working at Hasbro they wanted to maintain the flashy look so we worked on many designs emphasizing the flashy look. Q: How did you react when production for the project was canceled? BL: I was sort of glad when the production was cancelled because they were going to release a really bad film the script was not interesting and had no real deep plot. It felt like an animated special. We had idea's for a better movie that would showcase what Superman was about in ways that have not been told and that were not so obvious. Q: Is there anything else you would like to share from your time on the project? BL: While working on the project we were very excited to bring Superman back. We also understood that the most recent Batman films were not the greatest and were concerned that it would influence the new Superman film. The new twist to the film was that Superman had abilities but not as strong as he had before. He had to use rocket ships to fly into space and had to use other gadgets from his home planet to help him save people. We realized that this superman wasn't the one we have come to know and love and admitted to ourselves that this was a different character. Q: What's your view on the new Superman project? Why do you think this project has had so many problems every time? BL: The new project sounds interesting and I want to be optimistic. However the movie needs to have a director that understands the complexities of a character with so much power and responsibility. James Cameron or Ridley Scott would be perfect for the job. The movie needs to have a long lasting impression like the first one did. The problem right now is that they don't know if they want to retell the same story or come up with something new. Whenever Hollywood hears the word "New" the become timid and back away. Finding a good director is the first key. The second, is providing a dynamite script. the third, is to hire the most innovative and creative thinkers to boost the project emotionally and visually. Q: Do you think that a new Superman movie should be made? BL: Yes I do. We always talk about what would be cool to see amongst ourselves especially since Smallville Has become so popular. Q: What would you rather have seen: Wolfgang Petersen's Batman vs Superman or this new (in development) Superman picture? BL: If I had to make a choice it would be Batman vs Superman. But it would have to be done in a way that they didn't hate each other too much. If they did it were it was a misunderstanding like in the Batman Animated TV show that would be better. Q: What projects are you working on now and what is coming your way in the future? BL: Most of the stuff I am working on is confidential and I cannot reveal them to you now. But I have worked on the Star Wars Movies including Episode 1. I have also designed toys for the first Spiderman Movie. And worked on many animation shows including Nascar Racers. Q: Which one of the upcoming comic book movies would you like to conceptualize/model and why? BL: Transformers! I would love to do a new Transformers movie but with a more grown up feel to it. More realistic and deep! With lots of visuals. Q: A lot of comicbook movies have come out recently which one of those did you like? BL: I liked allot of them, Blade, Daredevil, and Spiderman. Q: There are a lot of comicbook-movies in development (Catwoman,Punisher, Hellboy, Blade 3, Constantine, Fantastic Four, Spider-Man 2....) which one are you most looking forward to? BL: Blade 3 and Spiderman 2! Punisher looks like a joke!

"Nichts endgültiges", so Warner Brothers
