Jim Broadbent geboren am 24. Mai 1949 in Lincolnshire, war der jüngste Sohn eines Tischlers namens Roy Broadbent und seiner Frau Dee Broadbent. Jim ging auf eine Quäker Internatsschule in Reading. Später ging er auf die London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art (LAMDA). 1972 beendete er dort sein Studium und arbeitete daraufhin am verschiedenen Theatern wie dem Royal National Theatre und der Royal Shakespeare Company.
